Andrelee Downs, who goes by Ricky, is on a mission to bring vibrant Jamaican flavors that share the story of his culture with the Wilmington community. A taste of the islands, Hummingbird Island Cuisine spawned from Ricky’s extensive career managing commercial kitchens and a deep desire to have more time to spend with his young family. Since opening day in 2017, Ricky and his wife, Sheena, have been the sole operators of the food truck preparing and serving the food. For the two of them, it is paramount that they know each of their guests by name. "This is a family business, and we treat our customers as if they were family,” says Ricky.
As a result, the pair have a dedicated customer base that come back regularly for the exquisitely braised and seasoned oxtail with butter beans, the tender curry goat, the tantalizing jerk chicken, and the hearty brown stew chicken steeped in tangy seasoning and slow cooked with vegetables in a comforting brown sauce.
These transportive island flavors direct from St. Ann, Jamaica are not to be missed. Hummingbird Island Cuisine embraces the sentiment, “The people who give you their food, give you their heart. Delicious!”
