Hungry Hippo
The Story
When Johnny Walker was invited by a close friend to participate in a cooking competition, he didn't hesitate. Originally from New York, his innate ability to blend flavors propelled him to win the competition several years in a row. When the pandemic struck in 2020, leaving him unemployed, he saw an opportunity to elevate his passion. Purchasing a food truck, he brought it home to his wife Kerri, who shared his vision of expanding their culinary venture.
Drawing from Johnny’s Dominican and Haitian heritage and Kerri’s Southern background, they combined their skills to take their endeavor to new heights. Johnny incorporated his mother’s recipes from her restaurant, infusing them with Southern flair. Take their BBQ Mac for example—it takes Kerri’s family recipe for mac and cheese with Johny’s Haitian jerk wings (think Jamaican jerk with a bit more flavor and a little less burn), celebrating the fusion that love and cultural diversity can create.
